Eye Examinations

Checking your vision to see if you require glasses or contact lenses is just the beginning of our extensive eye examinations.

We also look for potential ocular health problems such as glaucoma or cataracts. We can also identify general health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Our practice takes great pride in providing the most comprehensive eye examination possible and our state-of-the-art equipment assists in the assessment of your vision and ocular health. Our latest addition to the practice, the Digital Retinal Camera, allows the Optometrist to perform comprehensive health screening of your eyes. This is essential for anyone with a family history of macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetes.

Check-ups every two years is adequate for most people, but we recommend you visit more frequently if your family has a history of eye disease.

Your vision is valuable. Make an appointment today.

Retinal technology

Our experts use the latest technology including:

  • Digital Retinal Photography for detecting diseases at the back of the eye
  • Visual Field Analysis for glaucoma detection and management
  • Non-contact tonometry for ocular hypertension and glaucoma management

Our high-resolution Digital Retinal Camera allows us to take a photo of the back of your eye. This allows a more detailed and wider angled view than would normally be achieved with conventional observation methods.

The real value of retinal photography is that it provides a benchmark in the condition of your eye. This makes future changes easier to monitor. This technology is especially valuable for detecting slow moving pathological processes such as in glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Retinal images such as this one are kept on file to monitor future changes.

Visual field testing is an important tool in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma. It is used to confirm if glaucoma has affected the visual function, evaluate severity and to monitor progression of the disease. The Zeiss-Humphrey Matrix Field Analyser is a diagnostic tool used to examine a client's visual field. It is used in early diagnosis and management of ocular diseases resulting in visual field loss.

We routinely measure the eye's intraocular pressure using a non-contact tonometer, a tool which assists us is glaucoma management and risk analysis.

Eye Care

Regular eye tests ensure your eyes are healthy and that you are wearing spectacles most suited to your needs.

With lens technology we can now prescribe spectacles which provide clear comfortable vision for most daily activities. We take great care in prescribing the best lens for your individual needs. For example, if computer work occupies a large part of your day you may benefit from spectacles designed for looking at a computer screen. Alternatively, if you have dynamic visual demands, you may need a pair of multifocal lenses.

Ensuring that your desk, chair and screen are set at the right height for your individual requirements can go a long way in preventing visual fatigue. Eye strain, neck/back pain and headaches can all result from sitting in the wrong position for extended periods.

Ideally, if you use a computer monitor, it should be:

  1. Situated directly in your line of sight.
  2. 5-15 degrees below your line of sight.
  3. At least 60cm away from your eyes.

Working in adequate light is essential for comfortable vision. Avoid annoying reflections which add to visual stress by turning your screen away from windows and bright lights.

Try to take regular breaks when working for prolonged periods at a screen. Relaxing your eyes by looking out the window for a few seconds can help prevent fatigue.

When concentrating on a particular task we can sometimes forget to blink, allowing the front surface of our eye to become dehydrated and uncomfortable. Many people suffer from dry eyes while concentrating on a computer screen, particularly when working in an air-conditioned environment. Reminding yourself to blink can prevent this. Ocular lubricants are available from your Optometrist if dry eyes continue to be a problem.

It is wise to have an eye test every two years. If you are experiencing problems get a test as soon as possible.
